In an increasingly digital filmmaking landscape, it might seem surprising that one of the most useful tools for creating a convincing CGI creature can be a physical model. CGI artists can create incredibly sophisticated digital creatures, but understanding how light behaves on a real physical form can be invaluable. A physical reference model gives the VFX team something tangible to photograph and film under controlled lighting conditions. Although the final creature may exist entirely within a digital environment, creating a physical version provides the VFX team with a valuable bridge between the real and digital worlds.

why not just use cgi?

A physical model gives artists a real-world reference for highlights, shadows, reflections, translucency, texture and scale. A physical lighting reference model is particularly valuable for creatures with unusual surfaces—scales, wet/slimy skin, fur, translucent membranes, teeth, eyes, etc. Some creature can look completely different depending on the direction, softness, colour and intensity of the light.

A well-made physical reference model become a vital link between the practical and digital sides of production.
