On 30th May 2024 Stitches and Glue’s work hit our screens in Eric on Netflix. Eric is a six-part psychological thriller starring Benedict Cumberbatch, who just happens to be a puppeteer and creator of a children’s TV show full of puppets! Stitches and Glue, led by Paul Vincett and Becky Johnson, made the puppets in the show including two versions of the 7-foot-tall creature suit of Eric and the entire company of puppets for the TV show, ranging from triggered Hot Dogs to a live hands Police Officer.
Puppet Design and MakeRS
Eric was created and written by BAFTA and Emmy award-winning Abi Morgan, directed by Lucy Forbes and produced by SISTER, who worked closely with Becky and Paul to finalise the designs for each of the characters. In a race against the swift moving schedule of TV the whole family of puppets was built and shipped within 10 weeks. Filming took place both in Budapest and New York with the Stitches and Glue team on location wrangling the puppets, some of them even ended up in costume, hair and make-up in the background of the show!
When we were first approached about the 1980s based script Becky commented; “it sounds very much like our day to day, and I was amazed that someone’s actually turning this into a drama, because it can be very dramatic being backstage on a TV puppet show.”
As well as the Stitches and Glue crew of 12 talented puppet makers a team of 8 professional puppeteers helped bring this ambitious project to life.
Since the release of Eric we are delighted that Paul Vincett and Becky Johnson have been nominated for and won two industry awards for their work on Eric; the Royal Television Society Craft Award for Effects – SFX and the C21 Media Drama Craft Award.
It’s not too late to catch this gripping “dark and daring triumph” (New Statesman) on Netflix. And it’s well worth the watch to see Stitches and Glue’s award-winning puppets in action.
